GOAL: MOTOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT
• Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms.
• Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills.
CONTENT STANDARDS BENCHMARKS
Students will: As a result of participating in a quality physical education program, it is reasonable to expect that the student will be able to:
Skill 1. Demonstrate competence in a variety of activities.
Examples: lead-up games, square dance, fishing
Display mature form in rhythmical activities, outdoor pursuits, recreational activities, and modified versions of team and individual sports.
2. Incorporate striking skills that demonstrate accuracy, distance, trajectory, and consistency in a variety of innovative activities.
Strike with long-handled implements such as golf clubs, tennis rackets, or squash rackets.
Volley or hit a variety of objects with paddles or body parts.
Knowledge 3. Discuss the concepts that affect motor skill development and performance.
• Stages of development
• Complexity of skill
Use small-group format to analyze skill development and performance for a selected skill.
4. Analyze the critical elements of skills associated with sports or recreational activities to determine which are specific to the activity.
Utilize video to isolate the components of skills (such as a forward roll in gymnastics or a crawl stroke in swimming) that are identified with specific sports or activities.
Application 5. Critique game strategies for innovative or cooperative group activities.
• Identifying offensive strategies
• Identifying defensive strategies
• Providing modifications as feedback
Critique the performance of participants in an activity or game such as “Four-Ball Speed Ball” or “Four-Way Tug-of-War.”
6. Provide performance cues and feedback while participating in partner skill practice sessions.

CONTENT STANDARDS BENCHMARKS
Students will: As a result of participating in a quality physical education program, it is reasonable to expect that the student will be able to:
Knowledge 7. Compare methods of heart rate monitoring, fitness testing, respiration rate, and body composition through a variety of activities. Determine target heart rate by utilizing appropriate formulas such as
220 − age x 60% = low end and
220 − age x 85% = high end.
Create a graphical analysis showing physiological changes such as heart rate and respiration during an activity.
8. Define the components of fitness, including muscular strength, agility, speed, power, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and muscular endurance.
Define the components of fitness on a test.
Application 9. Predict outcomes in terms of the body’s response during phases of selected activities. Monitor approximate heart rate before, during, and after selected physical activities.
10. Design an individual fitness plan.
• Listing long-term physiological goals
• Listing multiple activities that promote the desired outcomes

11. Evaluate individual fitness plans.
Utilize various tools of assessment such as scoring rubrics, essays, and illustrations for evaluation purposes.

Students will: As a result of participating in a quality physical education program, it is reasonable to expect that the student will be able to:
Knowledge 12. Identify positive influences related to participation in different forms of physical activities in modern culture by exploring self-expression and social benefits and developing positive peer relationships.
Discuss behaviors for performance improvement.
Demonstrate respect for limitations of others.
Express encouragement for group members.
13. Identify similarities and differences among cultures for specific dances, games, sports, and recreational activities.
• Describing how sports and dance influence American culture
• Identifying characteristics of sports and dance that have influenced American culture
Discuss the influence of sports and dance from other countries on American culture.
Application 14. Engage regularly in physical activities based on personal interest for the development of a healthy lifestyle. Participate in individualized activity programs designed with the help of the teacher.
Participate in games, sports, dance, and outdoor pursuits based on personal interests, available resources, and capabilities.
15. Solve problems in initiative activities and cooperative games by determining causes and testing solutions.
Solve conflicts that arise with others in cooperative and competitive settings.
Pose possible solutions to a problem.
16. Plan a community service project related to physical education for the purpose of encouraging the development of healthy habits.
• Working independently or with a group to establish goals, objectives, rules, and procedures for a project
